Your paths

Hindi, Tamil and Telugu translations of this page are under review.

Doorprints can draw the walks you make while you hunt, so you can see which streets you have covered. A walk is a purple line on the Map. A part you have walked in more than one walk is dashed in deep orange. The legend on the Map names both: Walked once and Walked more than once.

Tracing and the alert are off until you turn them on. Walks stay on the device where you walked (on the website, in this browser only) and are never in a backup, a Save a copy file, Google Drive or on a server.

Turn on the trace

  • Phone: Settings > Hunt mode, switch Trace my path on the map. While Hunt mode is on, Doorprints keeps where you walked.
  • Website: on the Map, in the Trace my path card, switch Trace my path on the map, then press Start a walk. The website records only while this page is open and visible, so keep it open while you walk; if the page is hidden or the screen locks, recording pauses (Keep the screen on while I walk helps, at a cost in battery). It says Recording paused while this page was hidden. when you come back.

A walk you do not save stays for 30 days, then it goes. Clear the path (under the switch) removes those walks at once; saved walks stay.

How repeated paths look

Under How repeated paths look (same place as the switch) choose:

  • Clear (the default): the repeated part is thicker (1.8 times) and dashed in orange.
  • Subtle: the same width, dashed in orange.
  • Off: drawn like any other path.

The dashes carry the meaning, not only the colour. This choice does not change the alert below.

Alert me when I repeat a route

Switch Warn me when I walk a path again (off by default; it needs Trace my path on the map on, and it works while Hunt mode or a walk is running). When you follow a path you have already walked, you get:

  • Phone: a short notification sound and, on the Map, You have walked this way before. Doorprints needs your permission to send notifications; if you decline it says so, and you can mute the sound in the phone's notification settings.
  • Website: the same note on the page with Dismiss, and a short beep. The beep plays only if you started the walk from this page (otherwise: Sound is off until you start a walk from this page. The note still appears.), and only while the page is open.

Save a walk

When a walk ends (Finish walk, or Hunt mode stops), Doorprints asks Save this walk?:

  • Save with a house: pick the house (the nearest to where you stopped is suggested, or Search your houses), then Save walk. The walk is kept with the house.
  • Keep for 30 days: the walk stays 30 days, then goes.
  • Delete this walk: removes it (after a confirmation).

A house keeps at most 20 saved walks, and the device at most 200. A walk of more than 5,000 points is too long to save and stays for 30 days.

On the house's page, Saved walks lists them with date, distance and time. Show on map draws one on the Map (on the website also Hide from map); Delete walk removes it. Deleting the house deletes its saved walks. Settings (phone) and Your data (website) show Saved walks: N and Delete all saved walks; on the website the Map's trace card also has them.

Android's phone-to-phone transfer at set-up copies saved walks too. To leave them behind, delete them first. An import from a backup or Save a copy file never brings walks. On the website, other people who use your browser profile can see your walks.

Have I been here?

This asks whether any walk you recorded passed a place. It does not record anything.

  • Phone: on the Map, press Have I been here? and choose Where I am now or A spot on the map (move the map so the cross is on the spot, then Check this spot). On a house, press Did I walk past this house?
  • Website: the Have I been here? button on the Map and Did I walk past this house? on a house page, with the same two choices.

The answer names the dates:

  • You walked within 25 m of ...: a walk passed within 25 m.
  • No walk of yours passed within 25 m of ..., but one came within 50 m on ...: close, but not past it.
  • No walk of yours passed within 25 m of ... in the last 30 days (and or in your saved walks when you have some).
  • No walks to compare yet: turn on the trace and walk first.

Only walks Doorprints recorded count (on the website, only while the page was open). Your location comes from the phone or browser, and the check is only as good as it is: if it is worse than 25 m, the answer says it may be off; if it is worse than 50 m, it says Location not precise enough. Try again outdoors. A house with only an area, not an exact spot, must be placed on the map first. Shown only here. Nothing is saved or sent. Closing the answer forgets it.
